SPRING, TX — A pedestrian died early Tuesday after multiple vehicles struck the person on Interstate 45 in the Spring area, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
According to Click2Houston, the crash likely happened around 3 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-45 near Cypress Oaks Drive, just north of FM 1960.
Deputies responded to reports of a person in the middle of the highway and found the victim dead in the roadway. Investigators believe more than one vehicle may have hit the pedestrian. None of the drivers stopped.
Authorities have not identified the victim, although they believe the person may have been unhoused. Investigators have not said whether the person tried to cross the freeway or walked along the shoulder.
Sheriff’s officials said no suspects have been identified.
The sheriff’s office closed the southbound lanes for several hours while investigators worked the scene. Traffic later resumed.
In a Texas hit-and-run pedestrian accident, the at-fault driver is still legally responsible, but payment often starts with insurance rather than a direct claim against that person. If police identify the driver, the injured pedestrian can pursue a bodily injury claim against that driver’s liability coverage.
But what happens if the driver is never found? In this case, a pedestrian may need to turn to their own insurance instead. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage can apply to hit-and-run crashes, and personal injury protection (PIP) is offered with auto policies unless the policyholder rejects the coverage in writing. PIP can help pay medical bills, lost income, and certain other accident-related costs, while UM coverage may help with losses caused by an uninsured or unknown driver. These coverages can apply even when the injured person was walking, rather than driving.
Once an injured pedestrian notifies the insurance company, the insurer will investigate the claim, review their medical records, and decide what benefits or settlement amounts may be owed under the policy.
You have enough on your plate after a pedestrian accident. You shouldn’t also have to deal with insurers while you recover. Insurance companies may minimize your injuries or push you to accept a quick lowball settlement. Having legal support on your side can make it easier to build a strong case and avoid costly mistakes.
