HARRIS COUNTY, TX — A man died early Monday after his car crashed into a utility pole Sunday night in the 6200 block of Fry Road, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the official report, deputies with the sheriff’s office District 4 unit responded to the scene about 8:42 p.m. Sunday after a blue 2013 Toyota Corolla traveling south on Fry Road left the roadway and hit a wooden utility pole.

Cypress-Fairbanks firefighters removed the driver from the vehicle. Authorities said he was awake and breathing at the scene. EMS transported him to a local hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead at 2:58 a.m. Monday.

Investigators have not determined whether alcohol played a role in the crash. Authorities said heavy rainfall may have contributed.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division is investigating.

How Do Weather and Other External Conditions Get Factored Into Car Accident Claims?

Weather and road conditions can play a major role in causing or contributing to car accidents, but bad weather doesn’t excuse a driver from liability. Drivers still have a duty to use reasonable care when responding to the conditions around them. That means slowing down in heavy rain, allowing for a longer stopping distance, using headlights when visibility drops, and avoiding sudden braking or sharp turns on slick roads.

Insurance companies and attorneys will look closely at outside conditions when reviewing a crash. Rain, fog, standing water, poor lighting, road debris, construction zones, and damaged pavement can all play a role in collisions. While these conditions may help explain why a driver lost control, they can also show that a driver failed to adjust to known hazards.

Some of the evidence that can be useful in determining the role of weather and road conditions in a Houston accident includes:

  • Police reports
  • Weather data
  • Photos of the scene
  • Witness statements
  • Surveillance footage
  • Vehicle damage

In some cases, outside conditions may also raise questions about whether another party shares responsibility. For example, a government entity responsible for road maintenance or a contractor that created an unsafe driving surface could be held liable when their failures cause or contribute to a crash.
