HOUSTON – A fiery wrong-way crash on Tomball Parkway left one man dead and another critically injured early Saturday morning, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a KPRC report, deputies responded around 1:40 a.m. to reports of a collision in the southbound lanes of Tomball Parkway, also known as State Highway 249, near Jones Road. Investigators say a northbound vehicle traveling the wrong way struck another car head-on, igniting a fire that engulfed the southbound vehicle.

The driver headed the wrong direction, a 25-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second driver was found trapped in his burning SUV.

Deputies and tow truck operators worked quickly to pull the man from the wreckage as flames intensified. Officials said he was taken to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition.

Authorities are continuing to investigate what led to the crash.

How Do Wrong-Way Accidents Happen?

Wrong-way crashes are among the most dangerous types of collisions due to their head-on nature and the fact that they often happen at high speeds. They often lead to severe injuries or fatalities. Though relatively rare, wrong-way collision incidents are almost always preventable. Several factors can contribute to wrong-way driving, especially on divided highways or exit ramps:

  • Impaired Driving – Alcohol or drug impairment is the leading cause of wrong-way crashes. Impaired drivers may become disoriented, miss warning signs, or mistakenly enter exit ramps.
  • Driver Confusion – Unfamiliar road layouts, poorly lit signage, or complicated interchanges can lead to a driver mistakenly turning the wrong way onto a one-way road or freeway ramp.
  • Younger or Inexperienced Drivers – Drivers with limited time behind the wheel may struggle to interpret signs quickly or react to unfamiliar road conditions, making them more prone to entering roadways incorrectly, especially at night or in unfamiliar areas.
  • Older Drivers – Elderly drivers are overrepresented in wrong-way incidents. Slower reaction times and cognitive decline may increase the chance of errors.
  • Distracted Driving – Texting, GPS use, and other distractions can cause drivers to miss key signs or markings indicating correct traffic flow.
  • Road Design Flaws – In some cases, inadequate signage, poor lighting, or a lack of barriers may fail to alert a driver or prevent them from entering the wrong lane.
