HOUSTON – A man is facing a murder charge after a deadly crash involving a stolen SUV early Saturday, according to Houston police.
Fox 26 reports that officers say the incident began around 12:45 a.m. when a woman stepped out of her Ford Edge near Travis and Dennis Streets, believing a family member was involved in a nearby disturbance. While she was away from the vehicle, a man allegedly jumped into the driver’s seat with her 12-year-old son still inside.
As the mother tried to intervene, the suspect reportedly shoved her and sped off. Investigators believe she may have been struck by her own vehicle. Her son escaped safely before the SUV took off.
Police say the suspect drove toward downtown at a high speed and lost control near Lamar Street. The SUV collided with a Kia Soul and a Toyota pickup. The Kia overturned, killing its driver at the scene. The Toyota driver was unhurt but was taken to the hospital for observation.
The suspect suffered minor injuries and was taken into custody. Authorities confirmed that he and the victim did not know each other. The mother remained on site to assist police before seeking medical care. The investigation is ongoing.
Criminal and civil proceedings serve different purposes, even when they stem from the same incident. The state brings criminal charges to punish unlawful behavior, and a conviction may result in penalties like prison time, probation, or fines. By contrast, individuals may initiate civil claims to seek compensation for harm they suffered. In the context of a car crash, criminal charges might include:
A carjacking that leads to a deadly crash, like the one that occurred early Saturday morning in downtown Houston, can trigger both a criminal prosecution and a civil lawsuit for wrongful death or personal injury.
Criminal and civil cases proceed separately. However, a criminal conviction can potentially play a powerful role in a related civil lawsuit. Evidence used in the criminal trial can often be introduced in civil court. This may include police reports, witness statements, or surveillance footage. A guilty verdict or plea in a criminal proceeding may also strengthen an injured party’s civil case by helping establish the other party’s liability.
While a civil claim does not depend on a criminal conviction, the outcome of the criminal matter can also influence the strategy, timing, and potential settlement value of the civil case. For someone harmed in a crash caused by criminal conduct, the related prosecution can help lay a foundation for recovering compensation in court.
If you suffered injuries in an accident that occurred in conjunction with another party’s criminal activity, you may be entitled to compensation for any financial and personal losses the incident caused. Consider reaching out to a Houston car accident lawyer right away to discuss your legal options and get help pursuing the justice you deserve.
