2 Buddhist monks hurt in pedestrian collision on US-90

Dayton, TX – Two Buddhist monks participating in a cross-country Walk for Peace were injured Wednesday evening in a pedestrian collision on US-90 near Texas State Highway 99.

According to ABC13, the accident occurred around 6:15 p.m. when a pickup truck attempting to pass the monks’ pilot vehicle instead collided with it. The pilot vehicle then struck the monks. The pilot vehicle had its hazard lights activated at the time of the collision.

One monk was transported with severe injuries via Life Flight, while the other was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.

The driver of the pickup truck was unhurt and is cooperating with authorities. The collision is still under investigation.

The injured monks are part of a group of roughly two dozen who left Fort Worth on October 26 and are traveling 2,300 miles to Washington, D.C.

The eastbound lanes of US-90 near TX-99 were shut down in the aftermath of the collision. Authorities were also handling two additional collisions resulting from the backup. No injuries were reported in those accidents.
