Two women were killed early Wednesday morning when a vehicle struck them on Cullen Boulevard and fled the scene.

According to KHOU-11, a Houston Police Department review of surveillance footage indicates the incident occurred around 3:30 a.m.

The two victims were fighting in the street in the 8900 block of Cullen Boulevard, between Bellfort Avenue and Reed Road, when they were hit by a southbound red sedan traveling south.

The driver of the sedan failed to stop. It’s a felony office to leave the scene of an accident that caused injury or death in Texas.

Authorities are working to identify the victims. Police are still searching for the hit-and-run driver and believe the sedan may have sustained damage to its front end.

Who Pays for Hit-and-Run Damage?

When a pedestrian gets hit by a car and the driver doesn’t stop, the process of recovering compensation can be challenging. If police identify and locate the driver, their insurance should cover medical expenses and other losses. When the driver cannot be identified, an injured pedestrian may turn to their own uninsured motorist coverage or health insurance for compensation.

In some cases, if the driver is identified and charged with a felony for failing to stop and render aid, an injured pedestrian may apply for the Texas Crime Victims’ Compensation (CVC) Program to help offset their medical expenses, lost wages, and other accident-related costs.

What to Do After a Hit-and-Run

Being hit by a car is one of the most dangerous things a pedestrian can experience – and when the driver doesn’t stop to make sure you’re okay or call 911 for help, the situation becomes even more challenging to manage.

What you’re able to do in the moments after the collision will depend on the severity of your injuries. If you can, call the police. If anyone witnessed the accident and can share information about the vehicle or the circumstances, get their names and contact information. Most importantly, seek medical attention right away to diagnose and treat any injuries, taking particular care to check for head injuries or internal injuries whose symptoms may be delayed.

Finally, contact a Houston personal injury lawyer as soon as possible to learn more about your legal options.
