HOUSTON – A suspect driving a stolen pickup truck crashed into multiple vehicles at a shopping center in Houston’s Highland Village area Thursday afternoon following a police pursuit.

According to KPRC, Houston police say the chase began around 1:20 p.m. when officers attempted to stop the truck near the 2700 block of West Loop 610. The driver refused to stop and continued onto Westheimer Road before turning into the Highland Village shopping center, where the vehicle collided with several parked cars.

The incident occurred in front of major retailers and restaurants, drawing attention from shoppers and employees inside nearby stores. No injuries were reported.

Fox 26 reports that, according to police, the suspect had been under surveillance in connection with auto theft. After allegedly stealing a vehicle from a nearby garage, the suspect sped away, leading to a pursuit through congested traffic. Police blocked freeway access, causing the driver to turn into the shopping center.

The suspect attempted to flee on foot after the crash but was detained shortly afterward. A second individual was taken into custody during a separate traffic stop.

Charges are expected to include auto theft, evading arrest, and criminal mischief.

Who’s Responsible When a Stolen Car Is Involved in a Crash?

When a stolen vehicle is involved in a crash, the driver of that vehicle is typically liable for any injuries or property damage. However, victims – whether their own car was stolen or their vehicle was struck – may need to file claims through their own insurance if the thief cannot be identified or lacks coverage. Depending on the circumstances, uninsured motorist coverage or comprehensive coverage can play a key role in recovering losses.

What Makes Hit-and-Run Accidents So Complex?

Hit-and-run accidents can leave victims with more questions than answers. Whether the crash involved a stolen vehicle or not, these cases can be especially difficult to resolve because the at-fault driver may never be identified. Several factors can complicate the legal and insurance process and make securing counsel especially important:

  • Lack of Immediate Evidence – Without a known driver at the scene, gathering details about how the crash occurred often relies on surveillance footage, eyewitness accounts, or forensic analysis of the vehicle damage.
  • Uninsured Motorist Claims – Many victims must turn to their own uninsured motorist coverage, which can still lead to disputes over liability, coverage limits, or proof of the other driver’s fault.
  • Delayed Investigations – Police may not prioritize property-only hit-and-runs unless injuries are reported, which can slow down the recovery process and make it harder to preserve important evidence.
