Three people were killed early Sunday morning when a suspected impaired driver struck their vehicle at the intersection of Almeda Road and West Orem Drive.

Fox 26 reports that the collision occurred around 1:30 a.m. when a Chrysler 300 traveling south on Almeda ran a red light, hitting a Buick Enclave, which then collided with three other vehicles.

The three occupants of the Buick, a 24-year-old man, a 23-year-old man, and a 21-year-old woman, were all killed in the crash. The occupants of the vehicles involved in the secondary collisions were treated and released at the scene.

Authorities believe the driver of the Chrysler, now identified as Tony Jerome Oliver, 29, was impaired at the time of the collision. Oliver was taken to the hospital and is reportedly in critical condition.

Oliver faces charges of intoxication manslaughter in the three deaths. Intoxication manslaughter involving multiple fatalities is a first-degree felony punishable by five to 99 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

What to Do After a Collision if You Suspect the Driver Is Impaired

Being involved in a car accident can be extremely frightening. If the other driver’s actions prior to or just after the collision lead you to believe they may be impaired by drugs or alcohol, it’s essential to stay calm, be safe, and look out for your own well-being before taking further steps. Your health and safety should always come first – an experienced Houston DWI accident injury lawyer can handle everything else later.

Here’s what to do if you believe the other driver is impaired:

  • Check for injuries. Assess your own condition and that of any passengers. If anyone is hurt, call 911 immediately and request medical assistance.
  • Move to safety. If it’s safe to do so and your vehicle is operable, move it out of traffic or to the side of the road. Turn on your hazard lights to warn other drivers.
  • Call the police. Always report the accident, especially if you suspect the other driver’s impairment. Tell the dispatcher why you believe the other driver may be under the influence.
  • Do not confront the other driver. Avoid arguing or making accusations because impaired individuals can act unpredictably. Keep a safe distance and wait for law enforcement to arrive.
  • Document the scene. Take photos of both vehicles, license plates, road conditions, and any visible damage. Note the other driver’s behavior, such as slurred speech or erratic movements.
  • Exchange information safely. If possible, exchange contact and insurance details, but only if you feel safe doing so. If anyone else witnessed the collision, get their contact information.
  • Cooperate with officers. Provide factual information and describe your observations objectively. Avoid speculating on the cause of the crash or suggesting you may have been partially responsible.
  • Seek medical attention and report the incident to your insurer. Even if you feel unhurt, have a doctor examine you and promptly notify your insurance company of the crash.
